Body contouring surgery includes many procedures however the most popular are abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction and thigh lift. The goal of liposuction is to remove abnormal or undesirable accumulations of fat. It is not an alternative to weight loss nor a cure for cellulite. For the best results, the overlying skin must be sufficiently elastic to contract following fat removal. During your consultation, we will assess your tissues and the areas which concern you the most. We will carefully examine your skin quality and quantity, and the amount of fatty tissue in each area. We will also show you before and after pictures and will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure.
Although many areas of the body can be treated with liposuction, it is only on specific areas that the results are predictable and desirable. We recommend a girdle or compressive garment for 3 to 6 weeks following the operation depending on the area treated.
Waist and Hips: These are the areas commonly known as “love handles”. They are well treated with liposuction.
Abdomen: Liposuction of the abdomen is possible for patients who have minor fat deposits, minimal excess skin and excellent skin tone/elasticity. Most patients will require a full abdominoplasty to achieve their desired result. (please see Abdominoplasty)
Thighs: Liposuction may greatly improve the contour of the thighs. The best results are in the outer thigh (saddle bags) followed by the inner thigh and buttock crease area. In general, liposuction is not recommended over the buttocks or the outer thigh perimeter.
Knees: Accumulated fat behind the knees may be removed at the time of thigh liposuction.
Ankles: In some cases, fat deposits around the ankles may hide their definition. Liposuction may help but only in specific circumstances.
The surgical risks of liposuction are uncommon and unpredictable. In general, with large volume procedures, the risk of complications increases. We take every precaution to minimize these risks which include: shape and contour irregularities, bleeding, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.
