There are many causes and degrees of inverted nipples. If your nipples have inverted recently or in a progressive fashion, please see your family physician to rule out any serious causes.
For a developmental or long-standing nipple inversion, the cause is often a shortening of the breast ducts attaching to the nipple. A minor procedure under local anaesthesia can be performed to correct the inversion. This involves division of the ducts which later may compromise the capacity to breast feed. The results of the operation are variable and not consistent. Our plastic surgeons will discuss the pros and cons of the procedure with you.
